Musical Break Top 5 Producers Series : Jam and Lewis

One thing I forgot to add into my Top 5 producers of our generation conversation were samples of each individual’s work so that you can understand why those people were placed here. So over the next week, I’m going to post a song or two by each person mentioned in the Top 5. It may not be their “greatest hit” but provides enough evidence as to why they were in the Top 5 to begin with.

To start it off I’m showing you a music video of a song produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Anyone remember old school, big head, not in the gym yet Janet Jackson? Well here’s a throwback to the title track from her third album “Control” (yes I said third album, she put out 2 albums prior to this one during her “Fame” days. Told you I know my music, LOL).

Musical Break 1/24/09

Well, this time around I’m showcasing someone very near and dear to me. I love him more than anyone. Of course………..yes…………me. Not only do I love music, I play it too. So here’s a little sample of yours truly trying to make the piano sing.

Musical Break 1/12/09

Before you see the clip I placed up here this time around, let me explain something and vent a little bit………..

Now, for me personally, I’m all into actually seeing musicians play actual instruments and seeing live shows; I’m sayin’, I wanna get my money’s worth. I also understand the signs of the time as in most musicians are using Pro Tools, Logic Studio, Reason, Cubase, etc to create their music versus just recording instruments to a mixer and calling it a day, and it’s definitely cost effective (taken from someone who uses Reason as well for some of the demos I have made myself). However, I hate when artists use these tools to cheat fans out of a good show. It’s fine when you use it in the studio, but when I go to a concert, I want to see MUSICIANS, not a couple on stage faking like they’re playing, and maybe play about 5 minutes of real music the entire concert.  If you want to hear real music, go to a Stevie Wonder, George Duke, or Jill Scott concert, where they have a LIVE rhythm section behind them playing, versus an Usher, Beyonce, or 98% of hip hop artists where they, more or less, CHEAT.

(Ok I’m off my soapbox for now)

Now today’s musical break comes from a drummer by the name of David “Fingers” Haynes. He can actually play the drums very well, but he is famous for how he has manipulated the Alessis Drum Machine and is able to mimic live drum playing on this machine, including authentic sounding drum solos. Here’s a clip from a performance he did with Frank McComb in Japan in 2007. Enjoy!!!

Top 5 Producers/Writers in Urban Music in the last 30 years (2009 update)

This is another greatest hits blog from facebook. However, I omitted a couple of great people that slipped my mind at the time I wrote this, and I apologize to music for that. So, here we go with an updated list.

Before I left the A, me and Justin had a quick convo about who are the greatest producers of all time in Urban Music for our generation (last 30 years). We had slight disagreements on one of the 5 on the list, but the other 4 we were on the same page with. So here’s my top 5 (in no particular order):

1. Quincy Jones (THRILLER, 100+ million albums, enough said)
2. Jam and Lewis (The Time, JANET, and many others)
3. LAFace (the Deele, Pebbles, Toni Braxton, Shanice, his own stuff, Whitney’s “I’m your baby tonight” album, TLC)
4. Teddy Riley (creator of New Jack, Bobby Brown’s “Don’t be Cruel” album, Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous” album, Guy, Blackstreet, Heavy D, Keith Sweat)
5. Kirk Franklin (took gospel out of the church and into mainstream virtually singlehandedly)

Honorable mention: The Artist, Brian McKnight, Stevie Wonder, R. Kelly,Timbaland, Dr. Dre, DJ Quik, Neptunes, DJ Premier, Collipark, Rodney Jerkins, Jermaine Dupree, J Dilla, Diddy

Up and coming: B. Cox, the Runners

Throwback shoutout : The Corporation (Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson, Motown sound), EWF

Ok, let’s start the debate!!!

Musical Break 12/15/08

For those that know me, you know how much I love music (and that I do it myself on the side). One thing I’m gonna start featuring on my blog is REAL music performances that I happen to enjoy. We don’t have enough real music performances nowadays and most times you have to go on Pandora or Youtube to find it and they’re mostly adaptations from overseas.

This entry is a throwback from a few years ago at the BET Awards when they did a tribute to Chaka Khan. IMHO, it was one of the best tributes I have seen, given that you had PRINCE and STEVIE as the backbone of the rhythm section. Come on now, if you don’t respect that, then you need to go somewhere. BUT, if you love real music, ENJOY:

Part I  (Yolanda sho’ is fine ain’t she?)

Part II (Prince and Stevie kill it on “I Feel For You”)
